Jones Street fire

A structure fire occurred on Jones Street in Appomattox this morning, in which one person was removed from the building and died.

According to Major Robert Richardson with the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office today, the person who died in the fire Saturday morning was identified as Gregory Allen MaHanes, 70, who lived at the residence.

He said that a medical examiner determined the cause of death as smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, and the incident remains under investigation.

A structure fire occurred on Jones Street in Appomattox this morning, in which one person was removed from the building and died.

According to the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jonathan Garrett, the fire took place in a single-wide trailer on the 400 block of Jones Street.

Crews arrived to a moderate structure fire in which they worked to extinguish it while gaining entry through the back door. They found a man inside the door and removed him from the building, but he died from his injuries, Garrett said.

The type of injuries the victim sustained is being determined.

The Appomattox County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation, and the Virginian State Police is conducting a cause of origin investigation.

Responding were the Appomattox County Sheriff's Office, Appomattox County Volunteer Fire Department, Concord Volunteer Fire Department and Appomattox County Rescue Squad.

Attempts to contact the Appomattox County Sheriff Donald Simpson were unsuccessful. More information will be provided when available.
