Red House Road in Appomattox County was blocked off tonight after a vehicle struck a tractor trailer.
It is the second vehicle accident on Red House Road (Route 727) within a week that the Times Virginian covered, and one of many that have occurred on the road.
According to a Virginia State Police trooper who responded to the scene, the wreck occurred around 6:20 p.m. between Appomattox and Chap. Johnnie Lee Sutton of Robinson Road, Appomattox, was driving in a 2011 Kia Soul when the vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a 2018 Kenworth truck pulling an empty trailer driven by a resident of Red House Road.
Sutton had minor injuries and was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.
According to the trooper, a witness driving behind Sutton saw the vehicle “all over the road” and had almost ran off the side of the road one time. No drugs or alcohol were involved. Sutton allegedly got off work at 8:30 a.m. after working a 12-hour shift and had not gone to sleep.
Sutton was charged with defective equipment for tires and failure to drive on the right side of highway.
In addition to the Virginia State Police, responding included the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department with Crash Rescue 8 and Engine 3, Appomattox County Rescue Squad with an ambulance, and the Appomattox County Sheriff's Office.
