The Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD) reported three calls Sunday: two vehicle accidents and one possible structure fire at 9 a.m in Toga.
One of the calls that crews responded was a single car accident that resulted in two occupants being ejected from the vehicle. Crews assisted EMS and helped land the Centra One helicopter.
According to the Virginia State Police, the accident occurred around 1:45 a.m. on Rough Creek Road about 1.2 miles west of Route 633 in Appomattox.
Two individuals were traveling east in a 2001 blue Jeep Cherokee when the vehicle ran off the road on the right hand side. The vehicle struck the tree line and then rolled.
Both the driver and passenger were ejected, resulting in major injuries. The driver was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital by ground, and the passenger was flown to UVA Medical Center.
The investigation is still ongoing.
On Thursday, AVFD crews responded to a chimney fire just after 7 a.m. Crews arrived to find light smoke in the structure and ruled it a malfunctioning furnace.
Shortly after units returned to service from the first call, crews were dispatched to a two-car accident in the Town of Appomattox. Ladder 7 and Tanker 5 handled the chimney fire, and Engine 3, Crash 9 and Command 1 responded to the accident scene.
On Wednesday, AVFD took part in the celebration of life of Firefighter Jimmy Dean Martin.
“The fire service is full of many traditions; a tradition that is so familiar to each and every department is when we lay one of our own to rest,” AVFD stated. “Today we have a somber reminder of how fragile life is … The fire service comes together during these times of mourning to pay our respects for these sacrifices made by members both past and present. Thank you Jimmy Dean for your sacrifices, and we send prayers to his family during their time of mourning.”
