The Lynchburg Police Department has received several reports from citizens about an ongoing scam.
The scammer claims to be an official with the Social Security Administration and says the victim’s Social Security Number was used to rent a vehicle in Texas. The rental vehicle was stopped while transporting a large quantity of illegal drugs. The scammer pressures the victim to pay a large fine to avoid being arrested and serving several months in jail.
Anyone with information about this incident should report it to the Office of the Inspector General at https://oig.ssa.gov or the Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftc.gov.
