Former Appomattox resident Earl S. Day, 75, passed away Jan. 13, 2022.
Earl was born April 22, 1946, in Appomattox, VA., to Joel (Emmett) and Blanch Day. Earl spent his childhood in Appomattox helping on the family tobacco farm with his brother Buddy. Growing up he enjoyed hunting, riding bikes and generally being a carefree young boy in the country.
Earl first left Appomattox when he joined the National Guard in the mid 1960’s, where he was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington. Earl returned to Appomattox in 1967, where he then began his career in HVAC. Earl moved to San Francisco, California in the early 1970’s where he began work as a stationary building engineer for Bechtel. He would remain with the same building for the remainder of his career where he retired in 2009 as the Chief Building Engineer. Earl welcomed his first son, Todd to the world in 1975. Earl would later meet the love his life, Mary Day when she began working for the Bechtel security department in San Francisco. They wed in October of 1981 and went on to have 2 more children, Nicholas in 1983 and Tracie in 1987. Earl spent his reaming years in Pinole, CA just 20 miles outside of San Francisco. His joy in life was his family; if not at work you could find him at sporting and theatre events for his kids, in Clear Lake, CA where the family spent every summer boating and later in life playing golf with his buddies. One of Earl’s biggest joys came in the form of becoming a grandfather, he has 3 beautiful granddaughters, Adeline (Tracie’s), Haley and Maddison (Nick’s). Earl was loved by many for his sarcastic whit, good hearted nature and willingness to do anything for his family. He is survived by his Wife of 40 years, Mary; sons, Todd Day and partner Dylan Sims; Nick Day and partner Jessica Harrod; daughter Tracie Day-Torrevilla and son in-law Sean Torrevilla; Granddaughters, Haley, Adeline and Madison; brother Buddy Day along with nieces, nephews and sister in –laws Cathy and Liz and 3 of his best friends, Ted, Joe and Danny.
The family thanks all of those who have reached out with condolences. With a special thank you to the Earl’s High School Class of 1964 who made a beautiful donation in his name to St. Jude’s.
