Appomattox freshman qualifies for cross country state championship meet

Appomattox County High School freshman Madison Martin finished ninth in the Region 2C Girls’ Cross Country Championships on Nov. 3 at Green Hill Park in Salem. That placement qualified her for the state championship meet on Nov. 13 in Salem, also at Green Hill Park.

The Lady Raider runner finished the regional meet with a personal best time of 21:24, which was only 13 seconds away from the school record. The top two girls in the Regional race finished well in front of the pack, but third through 10th places came in within 24 seconds of each other.

According to her parents, Jeff and Jamie Martin, Madison is ranked 20th in the state, and her goal is to finish in the top 15, which they said “would be great as a freshman.”

The Martins also said that qualifying for states as a freshman “is a great accomplishment” for the young runner, as she is “the only Raider girl running high school cross country this year.”
