Beginning this season, the Appomattox Youth Sports (AYS) football program will participate in the Seminole District Youth Football League.
AYS Football Commissioner Buck Glover said that Appomattox, previously, a member of the Central Virginia Youth Football League, made the switch in order to expand their competition with an opportunity to play against more teams. The move was approved earlier this year during a public AYS Board meeting at the Appomattox Community Center.
“The town wanted us to join the other league because of the opportunity to play more teams, so we voted to go ahead and join their league this year,” Glover said.
Glover explained that the Central Virginia league faced a shortage of teams and participants, and sometimes Appomattox couldn’t field an 11-on-11 game. Aside from Appomattox, last year’s teams included Gladys, Lynch Station (Altavista) and Monelison (Madison Heights). Glover said the league has folded.
“I’d like to thank the community for backing us up because it’s a big jump for us,” Glover said. “At first going in, I kinda felt bad because I knew when we left the other league, the Central would fold because we fulfilled all four age groups, and I knew when we left that would happen. I kinda feel bad for those kids not having an opportunity. But I like the opportunity that we’re gonna gain because this is giving us the competition that we need…The opportunity will be a challenge for us but we’re looking forward to it.”
