Appomattox County Public Schools (ACPS) announced Tuesday that a new clear bag policy is being implemented for all sporting events beginning in this 2024-25 academic year, primarily to increase public safety.
The policy officially takes effect at next week's home games: Appomattox Middle School volleyball (Aug. 28), Appomattox County High School volleyball (Aug. 29) and Appomattox County High School football (Aug. 30).
In a letter published on the school district's website, ACPS said the decision aligns with similar policies at many area school divisions.
Policy guidelines are as follows:
Permitted Bags:
- Clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags.
- Small clutches or wallets, with or without a handle or strap.
- Clear, resealable plastic storage bags (Ziploc or similar).
Prohibited Bags:
- Backpacks, diaper bags (unless accompanying an infant or small child), purses, briefcases, fanny packs, and any bags that are not transparent.
- Camera bags, cinch bags, and non-transparent tote bags.
Exceptions:
- Bags carrying medically necessary items will be allowed but will require inspection.
- Diaper bags accompanying an infant or small child are allowed but will be subject to security screening.
Additional Notes:
- All bags will be subject to inspection at entry.
- Attendees without clear bags or with prohibited items will be asked to return them to their vehicles before entering.
- Clear bags will be available for purchase at events.
