Oyster & Seafood Festival returning in April

In April 2019, Joe Fahey (right) preps oysters with his son Matt Fahey (left) at The Great Wicomico Oyster Company tent at the Appomattox County Historical Society’s Third Annual Oyster Festival at Clover Hill Village.

While the Appomattox Oyster & Seafood Festival was canceled last year due to COVID-19, plans are in full swing for the festival to take place this spring on April 17 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the DeVault Family Vineyards in Concord.

The festival is put on by the Appomattox County Historical Society each year as part of its fundraising endeavors. Tom Adams, the society’s president, said that having to cancel the fundraising event for 2020 hurt them badly. After all, the Oyster festival (as well as the Wine Festival) is their biggest fundraising endeavor.

To make matters more difficult, the foundation that would normally bestow a grant to the historical society decided to funnel their finances into helping food banks instead.

“I can understand that,” said Adams, harboring no ill feelings about the grant.
