Raiders volleyball team off to good start

The Appomattox Raiders varsity volleyball team is off to a good start to the 2020-21 season, having won their first two games on their schedule in convincing fashion.

On Tuesday night, Appomattox swept all three sets against Gretna (25-20, 25-18, 25-15) in a game played at Appomattox County High School.

Madison Shirey led the Raiders offense with 15 kills. Kaydence Gilbert was second with 10 kills, followed by Ellie Peterson with 8 kills.

The Raiders defense totaled 11 blocked shots. Gilbert topped the stat sheet with six.

Last Thursday, the Raiders opened the season with a road win over Altavista, again sweeping all three sets (25-17, 25-12, 26-24).

Up next for Appomattox is a home match against William Campbell on Monday. Junior Varsity play begins at 5:30, followed by the Varsity match.
