Militia donates thermal imagers to sheriff’s office
Thanks to a donation to the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office, missing persons in Appomattox County may have a better chance of being rescued, and the suspects won’t be able to hide in the dark so easily.
On Thursday, Jan. 6, three days before National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, members of the Appomattox County Militia organization stopped by the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office to donate two vital pieces of equipment — thermal imagers — that will assist in a variety of law enforcement situations.
AVFD holds dedication event for new fire truck
A gathering of supporters and officials assembled at the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, Jan. 8, as the station unveiled its new Fire Engine 1 to the community.
On Dec. 3, the two-year project culminated with the arrival of the long awaited truck. It replaces the department’s 30-year-old truck, which has now been donated to the Samburg-Reelfoot Volunteer Fire Department, a tornado-stricken fire department in Hornbeak, Tennessee.
Fire Chief Jonathan Garrett acknowledged the town and county of Appomattox and the public for their commitment and donations in obtaining this truck. He thanked the community for their support over the past two years. The community stepped up in a “big way” with their outpouring for this piece of equipment.
Jan. 19
Pamplin OKs building sale
On Tuesday, Jan. 11, the Pamplin City Town Council approved proposals from last month’s meeting and discussed upcoming building projects.
The council approved a bid submitted by Chris Tolley at Piney Ridge Development for $7,500 for the sale of a Main Street property during the open public meeting. Conversations between Tolley, the town manager, and Mayor Sarah Hamlett Blackwell have included ideas of installing apartments upstairs and a retail store downstairs. The building will have a renovated floor system, bathrooms, an outdoor recreation area and outdoor dining.
Blackwell mentioned that the town is finalizing the designed development renovations.

Among the best in nation! Local FFA Chapter in top 4 percent with 3 stars
The National FFA Organization recently selected, from a pool of more than 8,817 candidates, the Appomattox Sr. FFA Chapter of Appomattox County High School as a 3-star winner in the National FFA Chapter Award Program.
The chapter members were invited to attend the 94th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. They were recognized for this prestigious honor at the second general session.
