County couple named top farm family

Mr. and Mrs. James W. Bondurant, of Route 2, Concord, were presented the 1975 Outstanding Young Farmer Family Award for the Southside Area in a ceremony held at the Annual Convention of the Southside Area Young Farmers and Young Homemakers held at Halifax County High School. The Bondurants were presented with an engraved silver tray and a certificate from the Virginia Bankers Association. They also qualified for the forthcoming Outstanding Young Virginia Farmer Family of Virginia Award which included a monetary prize.

Missionary couple speaks at Liberty Baptist

The Rev. Jay E. Stewart and his wife, Laura Lee Gray Stewart, were guests speakers for the “Week of Prayer” at Liberty Baptist Church in Appomattox. They worked as Southern Baptist missionaries to Kenya after being appointed in May of 1964. Jay, a native of Evergreen residing in Roanoke, was director of International Publications Services for Eastern and Southern Africa, Nairobi and Kenya.

ACHS senior receives leadership award

Appomattox County High School senior Katie Powell received a certificate of award for the ACHS Shell Century Theme Leadership Award for 1991-92 based on her completed application and current events examination. Two winners from each state received all-expense-paid trips to Colonial Williamsburg for a three-day national meeting.

National park hit by tourist slump

Appomattox Court House National Park didn’t recover from an early summer slump in visitation, ending the traditional tourism season down more than 14 percent in attendance. Issues cited were a 27-day federal government shutdown, Central Virginia’s worst snowfall in years, competing against the Olympics, and changes to traditional family vacations.
