The 2021 VHSL Class 2C Football Region Championship came down to the last minute, literally, to decide a winner as the Glenvar Highlanders scored two touchdowns in the final minute of play to cut their deficit to the Appomattox Raiders to 27-21. Appomattox recovered the onside kick with 39 seconds remaining to secure the win.
Appomattox had built up a seemingly comfortable 27-7 lead with 3:08 remaining but Glenvar scored on a nine-yard pass at the one-minute mark. Glenvar recovered their own onside kick and scored on another touchdown pass two plays later.
The Highlanders got on the scoreboard first early in the second quarter but Appomattox took a 10-7 halftime lead on a nine-yard run by Jonathan Pennix and 46-yard field goal by Tye Robertson.
Pennix scored again on the first play from scrimmage in the second half on a 64-yard run for a 17-7 lead.
The Raiders missed two second half field goals, one after a high snap, but connected on a 29-yard attempt by Robertson with 3:45 left in the fourth quarter. Tre Lawing set up the opportunity with an interception.
Pennix provided what proved to be the winning score on his third touchdown of the day with an interception return just 37 seconds later. Pennix stepped in front of a Glenvar receiver on a comeback route to the right side of the field for the pick-six.
Appomattox moves on to the Class 2 State Semifinals next week. Details will be announced later.
