Appomattox girls win first game in Friday night thriller

A clutch long-distance jump shot by Juliana Wilkerson helped the Appomattox Raiders girls varsity basketball team capture its first win of the 2021-22 season Friday night in a thrilling 30-28 win over the William Campbell Generals.

The Raiders were down 24-28 late in the fourth quarter when Addie Nolen sunk a floater in the lane with 1:30 to go.

After a Generals timeout, Macee Hargis grabbed a defensive rebound but the ball went out of bounds on a pass to Nolen off of a Generals defender. At the other end of the court, Wilkerson got the ball inside to Hargis for a layup that tied the game 28-28 at the 38-second mark.

On the following possession, a William Campbell player stepped on the out-of-bounds line, giving the ball back to the Raiders.

Appomattox called a timeout and then Wilkerson nailed the game-winner from the right side of the court, her foot just inside the three-point line, to put the Raiders up by two with 17.1 seconds on the clock.

William Campbell dribbled inside the Appomattox defense in the paint but lost control of the ball, ending the game.

The Raiders (1-7) will host Altavista on Tuesday. Approximate tip-off time is 7 p.m. at the conclusion of the JV game.
