The quest for a third consecutive Class 2 State Championship came to an end this afternoon for the Appomattox Raiders football team as they lost to the undefeated Graham G-Men by a score of 42-28 in the VHSL State Semifinal held in Bluefield, W.V.

Raiders quarterback Tre Lawing had tied the score at 28-28 on a six-yard run with 10:05 remaining in the game, but Xayvion Bradshaw took the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown to give the lead back to Graham at 35-28.

Graham later took advantage of a fumble recovery at the Raiders' 10-yard line when Bradshaw scored on a running play for a 42-28 lead.

The Raiders failed to complete a 4th-and-18 pass that was batted down by linebacker Sean Hughes. Brayden Meadows then sealed the win for Graham when he gained four yards on a 3rd-and-1 play with less to two minutes left to play.

Graham (13-0) will face King William in next weekend's Class 2 State Championship.

Appomattox ends the 2021 season at 11-2, but their greatest triumph was the recovery of head coach Doug Smith, who was recently given a clean bill of health after sitting out the 2020 season with a cancer of blood cells known as multiple myeloma.
