ACHS swimmers defeat Staunton River Finish just behind Altavista

The Appoamttox Raiders boys and girls swim team traveled to the Altavista YMCA last Friday in a three-way meet, where they fell just short of the host, Altavista, and handily beat Staunton River.

The evening began with both the boys and girls 200-yard Medley A Relay teams taking first place, and the boys B relay posting the third fastest time, as the girls B relay took fourth.  

The boys relay team of juniors Charlie Drinkard, swimming backstroke, Conner Fulcher, swimming breaststroke, Bennett Goodman in the butterfly, and senior Gabe Thompson anchoring with freestyle won with 12 seconds over the second place finishers.

The girls first place relay team of junior Catherine Thomas in backstroke, sophomore Morgan Flamm in breaststroke, freshman Mia Goodman in butterfly, and junior Berkley Jamerson in freestyle defeated Altavista by 10 seconds.  Additionally, the fourth place team of Mackenzie Fulcher, Abby Newcomb, Riley Fulcher and Kirsten Moore defeated Staunton River’s A relay team.

Swimmers that scored individual points for the Raiders included Charlie Drinkard (first in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke), Catherine Thomas (first in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke), Morgan Flamm (first in the 200 freestyle and third in the 500 freestyle), Bennett Goodman (first in the 200 freestyle and second in the 100 butterfly), Mackenzie Fulcher (second in the 200 IM and fourth in the 100 backstroke), Abby Newcomb (fourth in the 500 freestyle and 50 freestyle), Tyler Burton (second in the 100 freestyle and fourth in the 50 backstroke), Gabe Thompson (third in the 100 and 50 freestyle events), Parker Cheatham (third in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke), Conner Fulcher (third in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 500 freestyle), Kirsten Moore (third in the 50 freestyle), Kate Hix (second in the 100 breaststroke), Riley Fulcher (fourth in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM), and Berkley Jamerson (third in the 100 freestyle.

The two 200-yard freestyle relay teams also took first place in the evening’s meet, with the boys team of Charlie Drinkard, Tyler Burton, Gabe Thompson and Bennett Goodman winning by more than 40 seconds. The girls team of Berkley Jamerson, Morgan Flamm, Mia Goodman and Catherine Thomas also dominated their event, winning by 13 seconds over the next closest team.

Middle schoolers who performed well included Hollis Glover, who won the 50-yard breaststroke, edging out her teammate, Lanie Hamilton, who took second, and Noah Richardson, who placed first in the 50-yard breaststroke, ahead of his teammate, Lucas Hunter. Conner Burton won both of his events, the 50 butterfly and the 50 freestyle.

Appomattox was scheduled to compete against Jefferson Forest on Tuesday night at the Bedford YMCA. Results will be in the Dec. 22 edition of the Times Virginian.
