Nothing beats the taste of fresh eggs from one’s own backyard chickens. Now, thanks to a new ordinance that the Appomattox Town Council has passed, many residents of the town may keep their own backyard flock.
“We had received some requests from residents for an ordinance (allowing chickens),” explained Town Manager Gary Shanaberger. “Council voted to approve it.”
He added that the town staff and council encourage everyone to read the ordinance and understand it. “There are guidelines. Not every situation allows for chicken keeping.”
The new ordinance is titled “Regulation of Residential Chicken Keeping.” It amends chapter 117 of the Code of the Town of Appomattox, adding an Article V and sections 117-28 through 117-30.
