Raiders girls kick off season with shutout

The Appomattox Raiders girls soccer team began the 2021-22 season with a dominant performance, defeating the Martinsville Bulldogs by a score of 9-0 at Appomattox County High School.

Play was stopped midway through the second half due to the Mercy Rule, which cuts the game short if one team leads by eight goals at the 20-minute mark.

Catey Paulette of Appomattox was fouled in the goalie box around the time of the cut-off point, so she was permitted to take the penalty kick and scored for the final goal to end the game.

The goal was Paulette’s second of the night. Lyndsey Lawson led the Raiders with three goals. Mackenzie Fulcher added two goals, and Alex McNamara and Mia Goodman each scored one.
