Buckingham stuns Appomattox to win the 'Axe'

If betting were legal in high school football, most people wouldn't have put their money on Buckingham to beat Appomattox in the annual "Battle for the Axe" on Friday night, especially considering the fact that just last year the Raiders thumped the Knights 44-7.

While a closer score wouldn't have been a surprise this year, seeing that Buckingham improved in 2018 with a 6-5 record, most people (at least on the Appomattox side) didn't see the 27-6 Knights' win coming.

Overall, Buckingham won the battle at the line of scrimmage and with a pounding, persistent running game that accounted for all of their scores, including three touchdowns in the second half.

The lone score for the Raiders was a 21-yard touchdown run by Keyshawn Baker in the first quarter.

Appomattox (0-1) will host Rustburg (1-0) on Friday, Sept. 6 at Appomattox County High School.
