The Appomattox Raiders baseball team will advance to Tuesday's quarterfinal round of the VHSL Region 2C tournament after defeating the Alleghany Mountaineers 10-7 tonight.
The Raiders had taken a 3-0 lead in the first inning but fell behind 5-3 in the top of the third.
However, the Raiders jumped on Alleghany with a three-run fourth inning. Appomattox tied the game at 5-5 when Trey Shrock hit a comeback to the mound with the bases loaded. Chase Weakley was out at home but the Mountaineers catcher overthrew first base and two runs crossed the plate. Alex Caruso then drove in the go-ahead run on a single.
Caruso took the mound in the bottom of third inning as the Raiders' third pitcher of the evening and pitched the rest of the game, allowing two runs.
Appomattox added four runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a bunt from Weakley that brought home a run on an Alleghany overthrow of first base.
The Raiders will travel to Fort Chiswell on Tuesday.
