Appomattox County food bank serves community needs

This morning the Missionary Food Bank in Appomattox County was open to serve the public as it has done every third Saturday of each month for the last two decades-plus.

From 8-10:30 a.m. volunteers at the food bank, which is located at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, distributed boxes of food and drinks available to anyone in need of assistance.

Shirley Wheeler, a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, founded the food bank as a way to serve God and the community. Wheeler is a site manager for the Central Virginia Alliance for Community Living. However, the food bank is not associated with the Alliance.

Appomattox County Sheriff Donald Simpson and Major Robbie Richardson joined other volunteers, including those from various local churches, in preparing boxes and carrying them to customers' vehicles as they pulled up beside the church.

People who arrived for food were blessed with a variety of goods such as frozen meats, cereal, fresh and canned fruits and vegetables, and more.
