Gov. Ralph Northam had previously extended the closing of non-essential businesses until May 8, and restrictions on social gatherings until June 10.

Appomattox County Republican Committee Chairman Christian Raymond expressed support for the protesters, whom he said have been respectful in exercising their rights as American citizens. Raymond did not attend the rallies but knows several people who were there.
